The First Alberta Gay Marriage License– by accident!

Ten years before equal marriage was available in Canada, we applied for and were issued a marriage license, believed to be the first issued to a same sex couple in Alberta. This was shortly after privatization of registries in Alberta, and poor Arloine Eades didn’t realize she was supposed to discriminate against us. By the time we got home, there was a message from her boss saying that it had been issued in error and would be voided.  We could return it for a refund but decided the $40 was worth the cost to keep it. We investigated pursuing legal recourse but were told a Charter challenge would be needed and that was beyond our abilities and resources . We got married anyway, on Family Day, 1995.  Thankfully, others pursued the challenge a few years later.
